The new employee has been in the mine for three days. He remembers that there was an escape route somewhere, but not which side of the tunnel to go to! Safety in the mining industry is solved in these seconds, and there is no time to read the instructions.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety in the mining industry is about rules and know-how<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The working environment in mines and open-pit mines can be dangerous, so safety instructions must be known and strictly followed. Work is often done in shifts, and an expert is not always around to give advice.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rules are clear.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finlex.fi\/fi\/lainsaadanto\/saadoskokoelma\/2011\/1571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Decree on Mining Safety<\/a> <\/strong>lays down provisions on an internal rescue plan and personnel training, among other things, and it requires, for example, that there are at least two access routes from each main level of the mine to the surface. However, the route is pointless if no one knows where it leads. The rule tells you what must be in the mine. Competence tells you what a person does when it is necessary.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A forgotten instruction does not protect anyone<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is often the most experienced person in the workplace who knows thoroughly how everything is done. He has been there for years, and there is more in his head than in any folder. There is no new employee or contractor. When he starts, the induction is a long day full of information, half of which is forgotten before the first shift.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.competencex.fi\/en\/2026\/10\/13\/experiences-of-the-agricultural-machinery-fair-2026-what-did-the-fair-teach-you\/\"><strong>At the Agricultural Machinery Fair<\/strong><\/a> Santtu and Tapio heard that even after the training, users return to the same question: how was this supposed to be done? This is a familiar situation in many industries. In the mining industry, its price is higher, because the wrong decision can be made during an alarm.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Information travels with people and devices<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good orientation does not stop at one day. Deviation situations are practiced before they occur, instructions are found at the exact moment they are needed, and competence is verified before the person is given responsibility.
